SRAP member will lead with the NSW ICAC an ARC Fellowship on AI and Anticorruption

SRAP Member Dr. José-Miguel Bello y Villarino, a Senior Research Fellow at the University of Sydney and the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automating Decision Making and Society (ADM+S), will lead from 2025 an Australian Reserch Council (ARC) Industry Fellowship together with the NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) on the use of artificial intelligence for anticorruption purposes in the public sector.

Dr. José-Miguel Bello y Villarino (University of Sydney)

The project, which is anticipated to be completed by December 2027, is the first time that an anticorruption agency partners with academia to consider and explore the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to detect and prevent corruption in the public sector, while ensuring that those uses of automated systems are deployed with all the guarantees of accuracy, reliability, respect for human rights and respond to the public interest.

The funding of close to half a million AUD from the ARC, together with funds from the University of Sydney, and the contribution of NSW ICAC will allow several members of ICAC staff to complete a higher degree by research also promoting the transfer of knowledge between academia and public service.
