Dr Sofia Samper Carro brings Neanderthals to Pint of Science Canberra

SRAP board member Dr Sofia Samper Carro, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology at the Australian National University, participated in Pint of Science Canberra.

Held from 18–20 May at King O’Malley’s, Pint of Science brought researchers out of the lab and into local venues to share science in a relaxed and engaging setting. This year’s Canberra programme covered a wide range of topics, from gravitational waves and medicine to climate science, archaeology, and more.

Dr Samper Carro presented the talk “The Last of Them: Neanderthals on the brink of extinction”, inviting audiences to explore what we know about Neanderthals, how they lived, and what their extinction can teach us about human history.

As an archaeologist, Dr Samper Carro specialises in the study of Neanderthal and Homo sapiens’ behaviour, particularly through diet and adaptation to environmental change. Her work draws on more than 20 years of research experience across Europe, ISEA and Australia.

Events like Pint of Science are a wonderful reminder of the importance of bringing research closer to the community. SRAP warmly congratulates Dr Sofia Samper Carro on sharing her expertise and helping make archaeology accessible, engaging, and relevant to broad audiences.
