SRAP Meeting with Deputy Director-General, DG Research and Innovation, European Commission

On 2nd July 2025, SRAP members Prof Luis Salvador-Carulla (University of Canberra), Dr Sofía Samper-Carro (Australian National University) and Prof Sergio León-Saval (University of Sydney) met in Canberra with Ms Signe Ratso, Deputy Director-General of DG Research and Innovation (RTD) at the European Commission.

The meeting focused on enhancing Europe–Australia scientific cooperation through Researcher-led diplomacy, exploring areas where SRAP can contribute as a connector between research communities, and the importance for Australian researchers that Australia could join the Horizon Europe program.

Discussions centred on three priority areas:

  1. Promoting talent circulation and researcher mobility between Europe and Australia.

  2. Fostering multilateral science platforms, through a stepwise approach, including engagement with the EU–Australia Science Diplomacy Task Force and the development of the Europe–Australia Science Academy.

  3. Enhancing public engagement and visibility of science, reinforcing the role of scientific associations in outreach and science communication.

The meeting highlighted a shared commitment to advancing international research collaboration and reinforcing links between Europe and Australia through coordinated scientific and innovation initiatives.
