Congratulations to our member Dr Miguel Ángel Berrocal Rubio awarded 2025 International Student of the Year in Research by the Victoria government, Australia.
Dr Berrocal Rubio is a molecular biologist whose work seeks to uncover how genes and their products control cell differentiation and tissue development, with far-reaching implications for understanding human health and disease. From his early research in neuronal development at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and KU Leuven, to his PhD at The University of Melbourne, Miguel has combined multi-omic and single-cell approaches to map the molecular complexity of human development. His doctoral discoveries, including hundreds of novel human genes and thousands of previously uncharacterised gene products, have advanced our understanding of tissue homeostasis and regeneration.
Currently a Research Officer at the Murdoch Children’s Research Institute, he investigates how the BCG vaccine can boost immunity against diverse diseases. His research not only enhances fundamental biological knowledge but also contributes to precision medicine and personalised therapies. Miguel’s trajectory exemplifies the new generation of Spanish researchers making global impact from Australia, combining technical excellence, innovation, and a clear vision of how molecular biology can improve human health. Dr Berrocal Rubio research at The Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI), shows the importance of a multicultural and multidisciplinary team to produce amazing science that can reach not only victorians, but the global population.
