Yesterday I was invited to represent SRAP and Macquarie University in an event for International Women Day 2023 at the General Consulate of Argentina in Sydney.
It was in a joint event with Instituto Cervantes Sydney and the General Consulate of Spain in Sydney. They had a panel discussion with Sydney-based Argentinian writer Judith Mendoza-White (UNSW), the General Consul of Argentina in Sydney, H.E. Silvina Laura Aguirre, and the Director of Instituto Cervantes, Coral Martínez Iscar.

From left to right: Sydney-based Argentinian writer Judith Mendoza-White (UNSW), the General Consul of Argentina in Sydney, H.E. Silvina Laura Aguirre, the Director of Instituto Cervantes, Coral Martínez Iscar, and SRAP President, Dr Ángel R. López-Sánchez (MQ).
It was quite interesting to hear about their experiences, and also the comparison that it was made with the situation of women at the end of 19th century (using the latest book by Judith «A veces la tarde miente«, recently published by Editorial Planeta, one of the largest editorials in Spain and Latin-America) and now in the 21st century.
Again, all made me think that there is still much work to do.
Particularly, only 4 men including me attended the event (that was full with +30 people in total), with 2 of them being work partners of Judith in UNSW, and that was exactly the reflection I added at the very end of the event.
We need more men involved in these events / activities / initiatives, as well as of course fight together to obtain equal rights for women and men in all layers of our society.
In SRAP we are proud of our excellent women members, who are obtaining amazing results in their careers. Similarly, Dr Sofía Samper Carro (ANU) leads the «Comisión de Investigación y Género en Ciencia» («Commission of Research and Gender in Science») in RAICEX, as the issue of gender equality in science and research has been always pivotal in SRAP and RAICEX.
