On August 2025, The University of Queensland Regional Roadshow brought its inspiring outreach program to Cairns, celebrating science, community engagement, and regional connection as part of its ongoing mission to strengthen ties between academia and local communities across Queensland. Among the featured speakers for this National Science Week celebration was our very own SRAP Queensland representative member Dr Mariel Familiar López, who brought her passion for science communication and conservation right into the heart of the tropical city.
The event, held at the Cairns Botanic Gardens Visitor Centre , was part of UQ’s Regional Roadshow initiative, which has been visiting towns and communities statewide to forge lasting relationships with leaders in education, government, industry and local people. The program is driven by The Queensland Commitment, a long-term strategy focused on expanding educational opportunity, fostering collaboration, and building understanding across the region.
Dr Familiar López joined Professor Craig Franklin (world-leading crocodile researcher) for an evening of marine marvels and together shared cutting-edge research in an accessible and engaging format. Her session focused on shark ecology and conservation, giving attendees an enlightening look at the life of one of the ocean’s most iconic, but often misunderstood , animals. Her insights drew from both her academic expertise and her dedication to public engagement and STEM outreach.
Following presentations, guests were invited to connect over light refreshments amid the beautiful backdrop of the botanic gardens — a perfect setting to reflect on science, nature, and community.
For SRAP, Mariel’s participation exemplifies our commitment to bridging science and society, demonstrating how research can be communicated in ways that inspire curiosity, awareness and connection across diverse audiences.
