About
José-Miguel Bello y Villarino [joint surname] is a Research Fellow at the Law School of the University of Sydney and the Institutions programme of the ARC Centre of Excellence for Automated Decision-Making and Society (ADM+S). He is a member of the Diplomatic Corps of Spain (on leave) and previously worked in different capacities for the European Union. Among other accolades, fellowships and awards, in 2021 he was a Fulbright-Schuman scholar at the Harvard Law School. His current research focuses on regulatory approaches to ADM and Artificial Intelligence (AI), especially on how to deal with risks derived from the operation of AI systems from a comparative approach. His broader academic work has spanned many areas of international law and legal theory, taking an interdisciplinary lens to the intersections between the public and private spheres. His scholarship is driven by his experience as a diplomat and international civil servant, looking for feasible and innovative solutions to ongoing and upcoming legal problems. Recent publications cover issues as diverse as human rights and artificial intelligence, women in anticorruption treaties, golden passports, international trade agreements, economic analysis of human rights, investor-state disputes, corruption-related data, regulatory competition, space research and gender and the law. His work on the AI domain was awarded the inaugural Scotiabank Global AI + Regulation Emerging Scholar Award and his newest pièce-de-résistance, «International Anticorruption Law: Revisited», will appear in volume 63(2) of the Harvard International Law Journal. He has previously worked for the Commission and the Council of the EU and served in diplomatic postings in Eastern Europe, West Africa, South-East Asia, Central America and at the HQs in Madrid. His last position before moving to Sydney was Deputy Head of Mission in Islamabad.
