Bushfires have been a hot topic in Australia during last summer. However there is still confusion about the ‘hows’ and ‘whys’ of bushfire events.

Come to hear from our experts– short presentations by a panel of scientists will be followed by Q&A, snacks and some vino!

Dr Marta Yebra, Senior Lecturer at the Fener School of Environment and Society and Research School of Aerospace, Mechanical and Environmental Engineering, is an expert on the use of satellite data to provide information essential to make informed decisions about bushfire management. In her talk, Dr Yebra will present some examples of how satellite data has being used during the 2019-2020 fire season.  She is a member of the Spanish Researchers in Australia-Pacific (SRAP)

Dr Tina Bell, is a leading fire ecologist and a Senior Lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture and Environment in the University of Sydney. Prior to this appointment she worked in Victoria in the areas of fire ecology and plant physiology, firstly as a researcher with the Victorian Department of Environment and Sustainability and then as Senior Research Fellow in the School of Forest and Ecosystem Science at the University of Melbourne. Tina’s research looks at how Australian plants respond to bushfires.

Dr Stuart Matthews, is a fire behaviour analyst and Principal Project Officer at the NSW Rural Fire Service. His work include application of research to improving fire spread modelling, development of new ways of calculating fire danger, and operational prediction of fire spread during bush fires. Stuart will present some examples of how research has improved how we manage fire and new ways of communicating fire risk that were tried over the past summer.

The discussion will be moderated by Paula Camarero, a Forest Engineer with over 10 years’experience within the consultancy sector. Paula is also a PhD candidate in ForestConservation at The University of Sydney and member of the Spanish Researchers inAustralia-Pacific (SRAP)
