About

Dr Gonzalo Martinez-Fernandez (BVSc, MSc, PhD) is a postdoctoral researcher at CSIRO Agriculture & Food (QBP, St Lucia) within the Gut Microbial function research team, under the supervision of Dr Chris McSweeney. Gonzalo’s research interests are focussed on the study of rumen microbial ecology, ruminant efficiency, early life intervention and mitigation of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock.

Gonzalo finished his PhD at the Spanish Council for Scientific Research Agency (CSIC), focused on the study of the effect of additives (synthetic or plants extract compounds), on rumen fermentation, methane production and microbial ecosystem in small ruminants (dairy goats and sheep). The results obtained from this study allowed for a better understanding of the mechanism of action of some antimethanogenic compounds and their effects on the rumen microbial population in vitro and in vivo. During his PhD Gonzalo obtained a scholarship to visit three international research organizations: INRA, Clermont-Ferrand (2010, France), Aberystwyth University, IBERS, Aberystwyth (2011, UK) and CSIRO, Brisbane (2012, Australia).

In March 2014 he joined CSIRO as postdoctoral research scientist under the supervision of Dr. Chris McSweeney. He has been working on several projects studying how the rumen microbiota adapts to inhibition of methanogenesis and accumulation of hydrogen in the rumen, how the rumen microbial populations can be manipulated to improve feed efficiency in cattle and the effect of feed supplements on productivity during early life intervention in livestock.
